2017 Race Information

September 9, 2017

The 2017 High Point Cycling Classic marks the return of one of the most well attended and celebrated sports and entertainment events in High Point, North Carolina’s history. Founded in 2010 by avid High Point cyclists Chip Duckett, Randy Carda and Rodney Simpson, the High Point Cycling Classic quickly became one of the community’s most anticipated gatherings. The Classic is back thanks to substantial community support from the City of High Point, Business High Point, Inc., the High Point Convention and Visitors Bureau, High Point University and many other local, loyal corporations and individuals.

In its original tenure, the High Point Cycling Classic evolved into one of the most respected Criterium series races in North Carolina and the Southeast. Backed by the High Point tourism and business community, the city hosted the 2013 and 2014 USA Cycling Professional Criterium National Championships. The event was praised by competitors for the exciting downtown race course and the quality of the event organization. After each Classic, all available funds were distributed back into the community through a number of charitable entities. To date, over $100,000 has been granted to community organizations.

The High Point Cycling Classic enters an exciting new phase in 2017 as we celebrate a new relationship with the Bobby Labonte Foundation. We expect the new partnership with the Bobby Labonte Foundation to generate substantial funds available for grants to community nonprofit organizations. New this year, all proceeds will be awarded to local charities that support building strong futures for children and families in our local four-county area. So remember, all of your entry fees, sponsorship dollars, ticket purchases and any other dollar you spend at the Classic will go right back out to families here in our neighborhoods and benefit building stronger futures for our children!

Thursday September 7

Thursday September 7 kicks off the weekend’s events with the highly acclaimed Cycling Art exhibit at High Point’s Theater Arts Gallery (TAG). This year’s showing will premiere on Thursday September 7th and will remain open through the entire month of September. Artists from around the country will submit their work.

Friday September 8

Friday September 8 will mark the start of the on-the-bike activities. That morning a group of the event's biggest supporters will head out on a social bike ride with all of the event’s celebrity guests and VIPs, including Bobby and Kristin Labonte. The ride will conclude with a brunch style gathering at a local High Point restaurant. Later that afternoon, Bobby and friends will host a press conference and both race and ride registration and packet pickup will be available at the race site. Later that evening, Bobby and Kristin have planned a cocktail party and silent auction at the JH Adams Inn.

Saturday September 9

Saturday September 9 will feature a full day and evening of cycling fun and competition. The 2017 Bobby Labonte Charity Bike Ride will begin at 7:30 in the morning and offer three distances: 25mi/40km, 37mi/60km and 62mi/100km. Keeping in mind that the Charity Bike Ride is not a race, this is sure to be about as much fun as one can have on a bike! The criterium racing kicks off at 2:00 pm and offers many categories of amateur and professional bike racing. The sheer speed and excitement of the Classic will be fittingly topped off with a spectacular fireworks celebration at 10pm!
